Discover Engineering Family Day at the National Building Museum

February 22-28, 2015 is also known as  Engineers Week, or EWeek for short. EWeek is dedicated to raising public awareness of the important contributions engineers make to our society and out quality of life. During this week, there are many activities going on across the country designed to promote the importance of Engineering and STEM education.

One of these special events is happening right here in Washington DC. On February 28th, The National Building Museum is hosting its annual Discover Engineering Family Day.  The event is designed to expose elementary school students (ages 4-12) and their families to the wonders of engineering. There will be lots of hands-on and mind-challenging activities. Most of the exhibitors will offer giveaways that you can take home.  Best of all, the event is free!

I plan to attend, and hope that I see many of you there! What a great opportunity to spend the day exploring the exciting world of engineering.

What is Engineering?

Take a moment to see how some engineering students at MIT answered this question. I wish I had been exposed to STEM when I was in elementary school. I think I would have liked to become an engineer!

The Polar Plunge

Exploring how marine mammals have adapted to survive in the arctic.

The Polar Plunge

Did you know that blubber has three functions? It acts as a source of energy, buoyancy, and insulation. Take a peek into Mr. Stone's classroom as they explore how blubber helps marine mammals survive the icy waters of the arctic. This was a very appropriate activity for today, since our own temperature in Virginia has hit a record low. I hope we don't adapt to the cold by developing a layer of blubber!

Barrington Irving Visits BES

Yesterday, the students at BES had a very special visitor. Captain Barrington Irving, the youngest person to fly solo around the world, stopped by to say hello. He spoke with the students for almost an hour, sharing his experiences and encouraging each student to pursue their dreams, no matter how lofty they me be. Captain Irving encouraged the students to believe in themselves and to believe that they could make a difference in the world. What an incredible opportunity for our students to learn about various STEM careers from a true expert! If you would like to learn more about our visitor, I encourage you to visit his blog: The Flying Classroom
